The History of New Birth Baptist Church Cathedral of Faith International

Recognizing that God had work for him to complete in this vineyard, God’s still small voice beckoned Pastor Victor T. Curry to begin a new ministry, ‘New Birth’. On June 2, 1991 in his living room, Pastor Curry shared the vision with seventeen individuals identified as the founding members. The following night a subsequent meeting occurred and was so fruitful that an open organizational meeting was held June 9, 1991, at Florida Memorial College with approximately 200 interested parishioners in attendance. Plans were initiated to conduct our first worship service July 7, 1991, but God overruled those plans and the New Birth Ministry venture began with its first worship service at 10:00am on June 16, 1991 in the auditorium of the historic Northwestern Senior High School located in Liberty City.

Over 1200 attended on June 16, and 1000 individuals connected with the vision that very hour and became members of the infant New Birth Baptist Church. New Birth’s History is replete with an array of remembrances and accomplishments. In November 1991, the ministry’s first Agape Love Feast was conducted and fed/clothed over 500 persons. June 21, 1993 ushered in the purchase of our New Birth East facility, located at 13230 Northwest 7th Avenue – North Miami, Florida. June of 1993 saw the introduction of the Christine Curry Scholarship fund developed in honor of Christine Hodges Curry, the late mother of our pastor. The New Birth Baptist Church Family Choir recorded its inaugural project titled ‘Gifts of Praise”.

In March of 1995, New Birth purchased and transformed AM1490 WMBM; the only African American owned and operated radio station in South Florida. The station has empowered and encouraged millions of souls since its purchase, 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. On June 15, 1995, Pastor Curry was consecrated Bishop of Stewardship Ministries in the Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship and in November of the same year, we purchased the former Miami Christian College property. New Birth is located in North Miami, Florida and sits on a 13.8-acre campus. The Foundation Worship Service was held on July 2, 2001 and the property was dubbed ‘The Cathedral of Faith’. The inaugural service in the cathedral was held on July 7, 2002 and preceded by a motorcade from Miami Northwestern Senior High, past New Birth East (our former and first home church facility) and ending at the cathedral. The Dedication Worship service would ultimately take place on September 15, 2002.

Currently, the New Birth Ministries home base features administrative and educational wings equipped for Spirit directed and innovative ministry. The sanctuary can accommodate 2000 plus with fully unobstructed views and state-of-the art acoustics for hosting an array of worship services, Bible studies, conferences, concerts and the like. Another brainchild of Bishop Curry’s is the soon to be constructed Joshua Generation Carrie P. Meek Family Life Enrichment Center which will also be located on a section of the New Birth property. This facility will house a gymnasium/multipurpose room, classrooms, bookstore and café. The Dr. John A. McKinney Christian Academy was unveiled in August, 2004, a testament of Bishop Curry’s continued commitment to educational excellence and independence.

The year 1997 brought with it an onslaught of expansion activity as the New Birth Bible Bookstore opened for business on June 7, and the Vision to Victory Human Services Corporation opened its doors on June 20. This faith-based social service agency, serves an array of ages, genders and ethnicities with respect to employment, healthcare and childcare concerns. On September 2, VTV’S Christine Curry Child Development Center welcomed its first students. The Nehemiah’s Victory Community Development Corporation, born in July of 1999 was created to spur economic growth and development in deprived communities. Not satisfied with resting on its laurels, Bishop Curry birthed yet another ministry in the form of triplets. July 3, 1999 revealed the birth and dedication of the New Birth Faith Tabernacle Baptist Church of Hallandale, Florida. Affectionately labeled ‘Faith Tab’, the ministry held its initial worship service on August 1, 1999. Ultimately, Pastor C.J. Kelly would assume the pastoral reigns, a position her late brother, the Reverend Arthur C. Lowe held before her.

New Birth Deliverance Tabernacle of Belle Glade, Florida was soon to follow on July 2, 2000 and was result of Bishop Victor T. Curry’s childhood experience with God while cropping collard greens. Pastor Willie Williams assisted by his wife, Pastor Brenda Williams and the members of New Birth Deliverance, have established a ‘God presence’ in Belle Glade. Also, in July, New Birth Baptist of Bowling Green, Florida was born under the direction of Pastor James Carter Jr. Almost one year later, the ministry would move 26 miles east and be renamed the New Birth Baptist Church of Avon Park, in which Pastor James Carter and his wife, Sister Desiree Carter labored faithfully in that vineyard until his demise.

Under the ‘Spirit Driven’ leadership of Bishop Victor T. Curry, New Birth Baptist Church Cathedral of Faith International celebrates its 20th Church Anniversary this year as we continue to make inroads into ministry arenas others have abandoned, recognizing that ‘Faith Honors God and God Honors Faith’.
